Leighton Upson’s first major solo show, Evergreen, is a vibrant union of science and contemporary art.
Upson, based in New Plymouth, has spent much of the past decade documenting a ‘light bowl’, a 100sqm section of native forest in the central North Island. Each painting in the collection captures an aspect of the lush fauna to be found in the area in a distinctly unique way.
But Evergreen isn’t just about recreating the natural world. Upson’s work incorporates a range of ideas and themes that explore the connection between humans and the environment. He invites viewers to consider the complex relationship between nature and culture, while his attention to detail encourages us to look more closely at the world around us.
Whether it’s the play of light and shadow on the foliage or the intricate patterns in the more abstract depictions, Leighton creates alluring pieces of art from that focus on verdant growth from both micro and macro perspectives.
Using highly detailed techniques, Upson creates works that are both contemporary and reminiscent of the lush greenery that defines much of the North Island’s coastal landscape.
n an age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Evergreen is a striking, thought-provoking exhibition that showcases Upson’s remarkable ability to convey his observations iin an exciting way. Upson’s goal, to inspire us with the beauty of the remaining five percent of lowland natives, is certainly achieved.
